We recently spoke with Steve Brooks, President of Steve Brooks Insurance Services and asked him to share his thoughts and successes within the personal lines space.

PLGA: Tell us a bit about the elements in your background that led you to be doing what you’re doing now?
SB: An agent brought me into the business 25 years ago.  I focused on personal lines because I enjoy helping customers get the right coverage for the right price.  In California, auto, home and earthquake insurance is very expensive and I found most consumers had no idea what they were paying thousands and thousands of dollars for.

PLGA: Give us a brief historical sketch of SBIS and a picture of the things you’re doing at the present time.
SB: I started SBIS 20 years ago from scratch.  At that time, I didn’t have any clients.  Today, I have an an office that is 95% personal insurance.  We represent larger regional and many national independent agency companies.  We don’t advertise – in fact, we aren’t even in the yellow pages.  All business is referrals, referral partners and centers of influence.   We rarely write stand alone policies, as most of our new clients we write auto-home – and hopefully personal umbrella and earthquake coverage. SBIS has grown a lot over the past few years as we started working more in the “higher” end market.

PLGA: In your opinion, what are the opportunities in the Personal Lines space and why should Independent Agents be chasing it?
SB: Personal lines is a very stable business with a great annuity.  Good, agencies keep over 90% of their clients every year.

PLGA: How do you describe success in the Personal Lines space.
•    Representing superior automotive and home insurance policies

PLGA: Why should you choose an Independent Insurance Agent?
SB: Some people think it doesn’t really matter where they buy their auto or homeowners insurance. But this misconception could be costing them money, service and protection. Buying insurance isn’t like buying bread or milk. Insurance is an important safety net for your family, your home, your car or your business. Don’t treat the insurance purchase lightly!

There is a difference in where you buy your protection. Many people don’t realize there are three sources for insurance:
1.    Captive Agents, who can sell you the insurance of only one auto or homeowner insurance company.
2.    Telephone Representatives, who can offer you the insurance of one company, and only on the telephone.
3.    Independent Insurance Agents, who represent an average of eight insurance companies, and research with these firms to find you the best combination of price, coverage and service.
