We recently spoke with Michael Long, Chief Executive Officer of AXiA Insurance Services and asked him to share his thoughts – and his successes within the personal lines space.

PLGA: Tell us a bit about the elements in your background that led you to be doing what you’re doing now?
ML: Earlier in my career, I spent some time working for agencies that were built solely around the owner’s best interest and not the staff.  I quickly realized that that was not the answer to a successful agency and wanted to create a work environment where people could excel at what they do best. My desire was to create value for my customers and my employees. I believe that the success of AXiA is because of the professionalism and devotion of our staff.

PLGA: Give us a brief historical sketch of AXiA and a picture of the things you’re doing at the present time.
ML: AXiA started in 2001 and this year, we will exceed $30 million in premiums.  We have created programs and processes that meet the changing technological needs and requirements of our clients.  We offer such programs as:

  • Payroll Deduction for Home and Auto
  • Priority Client Group
  • Extended service hours
  • The Donate & Save Program
  • Value Plus Service

In your opinion, what are the opportunities in the Personal Lines space and why are you chasing it?
ML: Personal Lines is an ever-changing environment.  We need to be aggressive in meeting our clients’ expectations.  With programs like our Payroll Deduction Plan, we create opportunities to effectively market to larger groups of potential clients very successfully.  We believe that Personal Lines is a solid revenue source and with very few medium-sized agencies in the marketplace it has proven to be very profitable.

PLGA: Tell us about your success in the Personal Lines space.
ML: In a down economy, having one of the fastest growing agencies in our geographical area did not come easily.   Our success in Personal lines has come from partnering with the right organizations, and having the best people on staff.   For example, working with Agency Revenue Tools and partnering with the local chapter of the American Red Cross has enabled us to develop our Donate & Save Program.
